The DuPage Academic Achievement Workgroup Network (DAAWN) will host its annual benefit luncheon on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Ashton Place in Willowbrook.

A three-course meal will be served; there will be entertainment, guest speakers and a raffle.

DAAWN is the education initiative of the African American Leadership Roundtable (AALR). Its mission is to understand and close academic achievement gaps so that every child, regardless of race or ethnicity, can reach his or her personal, academic and civic potential. Formed in Feb. 2011, DAAWN is a collaborative community effort utilizing the combined strengths and resources of educators, student peers, parents, school administration, law enforcement, business and faith-based institutions.

DAAWN’s program goals focus specifically on the improvement of reading and math scores, the broadening of experiences, the appreciation of one’s heritage and culture, and the development of character traits that reflect responsibility, respect and self-esteem. If you would like to learn more about DAAWN or partner with it as a volunteer, contact Amania Drane, DAAWN Coordinator, at niaenterprises1@comcast.net

Luncheon tickets are $35 each or $300 for a table of ten with payment by cash or check made payable to AALR. Proceeds from the luncheon will fund future field trips and expand technology use for students in grades 2-6 from Darien School District 61 who attend weekly DAAWN tutoring sessions and math/reading summer camps. Tickets for the benefit may be secured at St. John Lutheran Church, 7214 S. Cass Ave. in Darien between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until noon on Friday. The church office can be reached by calling (630)-969-7987, or emailing info@sjlcdarien.org. The reservation deadline is Friday, Dec. 6.
