Top-ranked Red Devils stunned by LT, out in sectionals
DARIEN--The Hinsdale Central Boys' Soccer season came to a stunning conclusion earlier this evening, when Lyons Township defeated the Red Devils 2-1 in the sectional semifinals at Hinsdale South High School.
Ranked first in the state, Hinsdale entered the match without a loss at 20-0-2 overall.
Head coach Mike Wiggins said all the credit should be given to Lyons.
"I thought we did well to set the tone to start the game, and got into good scoring positions," Wiggins said. "They handled us well in that first 15 minutes of the game, and yet kept coming at us. I thought they were effective on the day. They earned a PK and that, I think, only gave them more confidence.
"Congratulations to them, and best of luck."
Christian Meyer scored the lone Red Devil goal on the evening, assisted by Bryan Loebig.
Although Hinsdale's season ended in disappointing fashion, Wiggins said his team still has a lot to be proud of.
"We had a special year and made a special run with a great group of student-athletes," he said. "They were fun to work with, and really made every training session a joy to run. This year’s team knew how to handle their success, and it made them a tough team to beat.
"You never know how long something like this will go, but you never want a season to end when you are lucky enough to have the best student-athletes anyone could hope for. They are fine young men.”
